Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month and we want to highlight the “First Lady of Chiropractic”, Mabel Heath Palmer. Mabel was the daughter-in-law of the founder of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer.
Mabel graduated from Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1905 and founded the first chiropractic sorority, Sigma Phi Chi. She continued to study anatomy and dissection, and wrote the first chiropractic anatomy textbook in 1918. She continued her career teaching anatomy at Palmer School for over forty years.
Mabel is considered a trailblazer for women in the chiropractic field. Minora Paxson was the third woman to study under D.D. Palmer, and the first licensed female practitioner in Illinois. Sylvia Ashworth, also a graduate of Palmer School, served as the president of the Universal Chiropractors’ Association in 1926.
