What Is Curcumin?

Curcumin (Curcuma longa) is a phytochemical compound found in turmeric root. Turmeric is part of the ginger family and contains over 100 phytochemical compounds aiding in immune support, digestive complaints, wound healing, skin issues, and inflammation. Turmeric has been used in Eastern Medicine and Ayurvedic practices for thousands of years. It has gained more recognition in modern medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties in the last 25+ years.

Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant that gives turmeric its yellow-orange hue. It is extracted and concentrated and made readily available in powdered form and capsules. It can be difficult for the body to absorb, so it is usually combined with turmeric essential oil and/or black pepper (piperine) to help maintain meaningful levels in the bloodstream for a longer period of time.

Curcumin is a low risk option for pain relief and reducing inflammation. Studies have shown that taking curcumin supplements alone can have a better response than prescription medications in reducing pain. It can also be taken in combination with prescription medications and other supplements without many, if any, negative interactions.
